Hello again. Today I will talk about polymer clay or FIMO.
Using this polymer clay I have made some pretty pendants in the shape of a bear for a child's birthday.
Currently the polymer clay It is not difficult to find and in addition to the best known brand, FIMO, we can find others on the market.
FIMO is one of the best known brands today of polymer clay o modeling paste. This polymer clay is characterized by being a moldable paste that hardens when bake it in the oven. Said oven can be a domestic oven since the approximate temperature indicated is 100ĀŗC.
This paste is based on PVC, a plastic polymer made up of several vinyl chloride molecules. The vinyl chloride polymerization process is highly toxic and takes place in factories in hermetically sealed reactors.
While it is non-toxic during molding, when baked toxic fumes may be released Especially if the dough gets burned by exposing it to more time or heat than indicated.
To work with polymer clay we must first knead it for a while to give it heat with our hands and make it become more elastic and manageable to be able to mold our pieces. Currently it is widely used for jewelery and beads, although it is also used to make decorative pieces.
One quality of this polymer clay is that colors can be mixed, thus achieving a marbled effect. And if we wish, we can unify the colors by kneading the clay for the right time.
In addition to using polymer clay to mold figures with our own hands, we can find many tools that allow us to make more precise and perfect figures for our work.
We can find in the market different molds of different compounds, cutters, texturizers, rollers, machines to crush or cut the FIMO in templates, cutters with shapes, etc.
In the gallery you can see photos of the pendants I made for a child's birthday party.
Materials
- Fimo or polymer clay of different colors.
- Cutter in the shape of a bear.
- Mouse tail of different colors.
- Permanent marker.
- Awl to pierce.
Procedure for making FIMO polymer clay pendants
First of all what I did was work the clay until it started to get elastic and I was able to roll it out with a roller and start cutting the bears.
The procedure is very simple, it is simply to do the above with each color that we are going to use and cut the desired quantity.
You have to take into account certain things:
- The thickness of the piece should be at least 4 or 5 millimeters, the larger the size of the piece, the greater the thickness should be.
- When using a metal cutter, sometimes the FIMO sticks and the piece is damaged, what I did was put a little petroleum jelly on the cutter so that it would not stick and would not alter the FIMO
- In my case, since I made pieces to make pendants, before baking them I made the hole for each bear to then pass the cord, because once the pieces are cooked it is more difficult to make the holes and the pieces can break.
- And finally, you have to be very attentive to the time and the oven temperature. It is very variable, since the time will depend on the size and thickness of the pieces, I recommend that you make batches and bake pieces of the same thickness and size.
And so far my FIMO tutorial.
I hope you have served and liked the tutorial, in the photo gallery you can see the finished bears.
